Caving
Throughout the Ozark Mountains, there are many caves that can be explored.
Spelunkers who venture beneath the surface will find many types of formations such as flowstone, helictite, stalagmite and stalactite, as well as, fossils, crystals, underground streams and spectacular waterfalls. However, if you are inexperienced, it is advisable to have a guide or professional spelunker to show you the way. With a guide, you will learn about the habitat, history, archaeology, and exploring techniques. Wild caving requires climbing and crawling, can be very strenuous and may be very dangerous. However, with the proper guide and information, you will have a grand and spectacular experience.
The Park Service asks: "For your safety, please stay out of caves unless you have skills and equipment to safely negotiate them. A helmet and three sources of light are the minimum equipment for each person in any cave. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return."

We have one business in the county that offers guided wild cave education. There are three other commercial caves around the area that offer guided tours on an hourly basis. These caves are absolutely breathtaking and you will be in awe of their natural beauty. You'll find Newton County's own Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome Caverns a once in a lifetime caving experience.
Newton County has many miles of unspoiled forests, the Buffalo National River, and fantastic hiking trails, but in addition to all of this there is another wilderness area to explore just below the surface. Some people might not realize it but below these beautiful mountains, valleys and streams, there is a dazzling underworld of limestone caves in these Ozark Mountains.
